Western Figure. Born in Western Kentucky, he was a Texas Ranger when he decided to trail blaze cattle to the western frontier. In 1869, he purchased part of the Maxwell Land Grant in New Mexico, built a ranch and became the area's first major plains pioneer, cattleman rancher. He helped establish the Dawson Trail which herded cattle to Colorado, California and points although the western coast states. By the time he sold his ranch in 1901, he was also owner of the Dawson Fuel Company. The town of Dawson, New Mexico was named after him.
