Martin Lutz was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry & Martha (Ebersole) Lutz. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Greene Township, Franklin County, and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 24, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. G, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry.

He fell ill and was hospitalized throughout much of December 1864 and into January but returned to fight in the battle of Fort Stedman on March 25, 1865, and the final assault on the Confederate works at Petersburg, Virginia, on April 2.

He survived those battles and was honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

Shortly after returning from war, Martin moved to Lawrence County, Illinois, where he married Elizabeth Ann Combs October 20, 1867.

Their children were (possibly an incomplete list)

Lilly Jane (b. @1869),
Mary E. (b. @1871),
Dellie R. (b. @1873),
and Minnie B. (b. @1876).

In 1880, they lived in Denison, Lawrence County.
