John Cotton was born in North Carolina to John and Mary Lodema Felson Cotton.  His father was a
Revolutionary War patriot (DAR # A026381) in the North Carolina Continental Line, 10 Regiment of Major Ash's Company from 1777-1779.  In 1779/80, John travelled with his parents in the Donelson Flotilla that arrived in what is now Nashville in 24 April1780. John grew up in the Caney Fork River area on land that his father found during a hunting expedition from the Bluffs of Fort Nashborough.  In 1811, Martha moved to Warren County, Tennessee with her parents, Reuben and Milly Asher Roberts.  John Cotton's father and Martha's father knew each other in North Carolina.  Reuben was also a Revolutionary War Patriot (DAR # A097023). John and Martha married 20 Jan 1813 in Warren County.  They owned land near
McMinnville and had 9 children: Mathew b 1813; Shrilda B 1814; William Felson b 1815; John McKelvey b 1816; Reuben b 1820; Sarah b 1821; Stark b 1826; Thomas Alexander b 1829; Mary Lodema b 1830. Martha died 15 Oct 1850 and John died in 1853.  They were both buried in the Cotton/Cotton Cemetery on the west bank of the Caney River, near Rock Island, Tennessee.
