Helen Benfield Byers, 89, of Statesville, died Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born April 30, 1916 in Esom Hill, Ga., to the late Harvey Sylvance and Tressie Timms Benfield, Mrs. Byers was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she formerly served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles H. Byers. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, John Byers; four daughters, Nancy B. Lamb, Margaret B. Dellinger and Janet B. Elliott, all of Statesville, and Dorothy “Dot” Hawn of Conover; two sisters, Lorene B. Fox and Charlcie B. Lackey, both of Statesville; three brothers, Gordon Benfield of North Wilkesboro, Ray Benfield of Winston-Salem and Benny Benfield of Statesville; 12 grandchildren, Julie L. Shissler, Lorie L. McDaniel, Billy Lamb, Charles Joe Killian, Kenneth Samuel Killian, Jr., Shannon K. Rogers, Karen B. Messick, Pam B. Henderson, Leigh B. Allen, Robin D. Murphy, Wesley Elliott and Tracy E. Cooper; and 19 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Byers was preceded in death by one son, Charles Wayne Byers, on May 14, 1970; and by a number of brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 13, at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Henry Cook and Dr. Brian Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Active pall bearers will be Billy Lamb, Charlie Killian, Kenneth Killian Jr., Wesley Elliott Jr., Allen “Sonny” Messick, Greg Murphy, Dennis Stewart and Boyd Anderson.
