She was also known as Deanna Mertle. She and her husband, Elmer Mertle, changed their names legally after they left the People's Temple in 1974 and became opponents to Rev. Jim Jones. They formed an organization called the Human Freedom Center for those who have left cults. Al and Jeannie were very high in the People's Temple before they left. They were also founders of the Concerned Relatives. They wrote a book entitled "Six Years with God" in 1980 about their experience in the People's Temple. They were both shot to death and their daughter Daphene was also shot to death in their home. All three had been shot in the head with a .22-caliber weapon on Feb. 26, 1980, at their cottage at 2731 Woolsey St. near College Avenue. Biological mother of Daphene (1963-1980) and Edward Michael also known as "Eddie" born in 1962 with Tom Updyke. Jeannie or Deanna was also stepmother to Steve Mertle (born in 1956); Linda Mertle (born in 1958); and Diana Mertle (born in 1959). She and her husband were also foster parents to many children from the People's Temple. But upon departure from the People's Temple, they were ordered to return the children to Rev. James Warren Jones who had custodial rights of all the children.
