Sarah has always been assumed by Allen researchers to be the daughter Sarah named in the will of Zachariah Allen of Greene Co., IL, where she was married. This seemed to be confirmed by her Franklin county death record on which her husband Grieves reported that she was born in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC, exactly where Zachariah was from. However, further research indicates that his was a different Sarah. Zachariah had a brother Thomas who also came to Greene Co., IL and who also had a daughter named Sarah, but apparently not ours. My best guess at this stage is that she was a relative of some kind who may have been living with or near the rather large Allen clan.

However, her son-in-law James F. Rutherford stated on his wife's death certificate that her mother's maiden name was Thomas, born in South Carolina. He was wrong about South Carolina and he may have been wrong about Thomas. Her marriage record gives her name as Sarah Allen, not Mrs. Sarah Allen, but considering her age at her marriage to Grieves, 36, she may have been married before and Allen may have been her married name.

There is another hint that she may have been a widow. A Sarah Francis Allen bought land in 1831 in Madison Co., IL, adjoining Macoupin to the south, which adjoins Greene to the east. This is something married and never-married women generally did not do at that time, so she was likely a widow, but there's no proof she was our Sarah Frances Allen.
