OBITUARY :
JOHN FRANKLIN BIRELY, 62, of 13483 Sunrise Drive, Blue Ridge Summit, PA died at 4:00 P.M. Friday, April 25, 2008 in the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD following a short illness.

He was born on November 12, 1945 in Waynesboro, PA; he was the son of the late Harold F. and Hannah Gertrude (McFerren) Birely. He lived all is life in the Blue Ridge Summit area.

Mr. Birely graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the class of 1963. He then received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology from Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD in 1973.

He served in the United States Air Force, serving in the Vietnam Conflict.

He and his wife, Almeda May (Null) Birely, were married June 28, 1973 in Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blue Ridge Summit. They moved to the present residence in 1975.

Mr. Birely was employed as a Production Manager for Occupational Services, Inc. in Chambersburg, PA for 24 years. He retired in 1999. Following his retirement, he was self-employed in the restoration and cleaning of decks.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1758 of Waynesboro; Cascade American Legion Post 239 of Cascade, MD and Blue Ridge Sportsmen Association.

Mr. Birely was one of the people who was instrumental in getting Happel's Meadows in Blue Ridge Summit designated as a state wetlands area. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, rescuing greyhounds and being around people.

He was the last of his immediate family.
A Celebration of His Life will be memorializing from 1:00 P.M. through 4:00 P.M. Saturday, May 3, 2008 at his home.

The family wishes the omission of flowers and contributions may be made to either, Occupational Services Inc. 17 Redwood Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or Greyhounds Pets of America/MD, Inc., P.O. Box 42103, Baltimore, MD 21284-2103.
