A United States Air Force veteran of World War II, he was commander of the Air Force Reserve in Galveston for many years and retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Survivors include his wife, Daphne; his mother Mrs. E.H. (Ethel) Thornton Sr; son Robert Richard Thornton Jr; step-son, Steve Price; two daughters, Mrs Robert (Sharon) Baker and Mrs. Mike (Terry) Picco; a step-daughter Andrea DeLa Pena; a brother, E.H. Thornton, Jr; a sister, Ruth T. Brown; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services at Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston, the Rev. John Donovan officiating. Burial in Houston National Cemetery under the direction of J. Levy & Bro. Funeral Home.

Robert was one of the crew of a B-24 Liberator that was shot down 1 April 1944 near the area of Arras, France in the vicinity of the German border. Col James M Thompson the Command Pilot, was killed in the crash. Three airmen were able to evade capture, however, the other eight crew members were captured and taken as POW's.
