Ruth Ellen Underwood was born to a very Christian-dedicated family in West Baden/Prospect area of Indiana, Edward E. & Fannie Ethel (Wilson) Underwood. Only one other sibling was born, Harold L.

Ruth fell for a dashing young local boy from nowhere, Lawrence Eleazer Heckler, as documented in her 1922 Diary left for her only granddaughter, Chiquita, of French Lick. She and Lawrence married May 10, 1924 and lived in a nice house in West Baden at the beginning of Abydel Road.

Then the real love of her life was born, her only child, little Buster - Melvin (Lawrence Melvin). She doted on him her entire life. He grew up, left home at a young age and joined the Navy, married, and gave Ruth 3 grandchildren to carry their heritage.

Alas, the Heckler love faded, they divorced and she married a great guy, Harvey Anderson Condra on Feb. 21, 1948 in Searcy, Arkansas. They eventually moved to a farm in French Lick that someday would be under water by the Patoka Lake. They raised farm animals and a big garden, making them self-sufficient with food. While she canned and packed away, Harvey worked at the 7-Up plant in West Baden.

By 1980, she had heavily carried the heartache of losing both her grandsons to tragic deaths. Ruth and Harvey remained blissful partners until their end together at Medco Nursing Home in French Lick.

Later to be discovered, it was found that she had lovingly left the greatest treasure of all for her granddaughter Chiquita - tintype and black & white pictures, books and records, precious items and historical data from her life and of her parents and grandparents. Ruth left a vivid trail to pick up and follow, step by step, for those up to the challenge - her legacy.

In 2011, Ruth's granddaughter, Chiquita (Heckler) Baker of Florida, donated over 167 years of her family and of the town's to the French Lick/West Baden Museum (in the care of her cousin Peter Grigsby) in Ruth's memory. She has also left footsteps of Orange County history on http://www.InGenWeb.org/InOrange with another cousin, Coordinator Charlie Tredway.

A very heartfelt thank-you to Rick France for creating this memorial of my grandmother. Little did I know the many blessings it would bring to our family. A personal meeting in Indianapolis with him and another FindaGrave donor, Sandy Dill, has led to friendships reaching across a thousand miles, as well as brought about the full circle of life and final peace for my Papaw Lawrence as he finally received a proper headstone memorial after 45 years.---Chiquita & Bobby.
