B, 13th S.C.V., at Lightwood Knot Springs, near Columbia, in 1861, at that time was not mustered into service, and came back home, went to school for one year. I was on the coast at Wilmington, N.C. during the winter of 1862; went to Virginia joined Co. B 13th Reg., 1863, and remained there until LEE's surrender at Appamatox. I was ever ready for duty, never missed a roll call, never straggled, never was wounded, was offered promotion, but would not accept, was many times selected for dangerous duty, was called by me colonel as one of his ‘dare-devil boys.' I did my full duty as a soldier, and stacked guns with the boys April 9th, 1865, at Appamatox court house."
