John Allen Campbell, the son of Richard Hilburn and Michelle Barber Campbell, was born in Perry County, Tennessee in 1839. John Allen was the second born of nine children and the oldest son in the family.

John Allen's paternal grandparents were Richard Charles and Frances Kelly Campbell, both of whom were born in South Carolina in 1797 and 1800, respectively. His maternal grandfather was Abram Barber.

On February 16, 1860 John Allen Campbell married Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Blackwell in White Oak, Franklin County, Arkansas. Betty was the daughter of John Hamilton and Sarah Jane Powell Blackwell. From this union nine children were born.

The United States Civil War broke out shortly after John and Betty were married. Throughout the war he served proudly with the Union Army.

For a living, John Allen was a rock layer. He helped build the Presbyterian Church that still stands in Harmony, Arkansas today. The church was so well built that it withstood an EF-4 tornado in the spring of 2011, when other buildings around it were demolished.

While living in Harmony he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, which he also helped build.

John Allen died and was laid to rest in the Harmony Cemetery in Harmony, Arkansas on May 9, 1918.
