Native American Indian Leader. Chief Tecopa (Teca-Avats) became famous as the keeper of the peace of the "Ni-Wi" Pauites. The Pauites inhabited areas of Oregon, Utah, Calfornia and Nevada. The area of southern Nevada, including the city of Pahrump, where Chief Tecopa was ultimately buried were under the leadership of Chief Tecopa. Chief Tecopa was alive prior to the Anglo-Saxon migration into the Southern Basin region of Nevada, and lived until between 1904-1906 (there are conflicting dates in historic accounts). He attempted to make peace with the settlers instead of fight them, in an attempt to better his people. He was known as the great peace maker. Chief Tecopa was buried in the town of Pahrump, Nevada.
