Conesville; son of James M. and Lydia Brockway, born May 11, 1836 in Jefferson Co., Penn.; with parents emigrated to Muscatine Co., Iowa, in the spring of 1842; located in this township, then called Cedar; spent part of 1858, 1859 and 1860 in the pineries of Jackson Co., Wis.; in the fall and winter of 1860 and 1861, attended school at Mt. Pleasant Iowa. Enlisted in Co. B, of the 35th I. V. I., Aug.13, 1861; participated in the battle at Jackson, Miss., siege of Vicksburg, in the charge of the 22d of May, 1863, the siege of Jackson, routing of Joe Johnston and capture of several hundred men; was also with Banks in his Red River expedition, at the battle of Henderson Hill, Pleasant Hill and Yellow Bayou and Monsouri, La; Tupelo, Tenn.; with Gen. Steele in Arkansas; at Nashville, Tenn,; and at the siege of Mobile, Ala,; mustered out Aug. 10, 1865, at Davenport, Iowa; in the winter of 1866-67, operated in the Wisconsin pineries again. Married Miss Jane Davison, of this county, Dec. 29. 1869; she was born April 10, 1850, in Illinois; have three children--- Rhoda E., Helen M., and Lillian; lost one infant. Mr. B. owns 300 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. Greenbacker.

Emmet Addiss Brockway, age 76, was born on Friday; March 11, 1836 in Brockway; Jefferson County, Pennsylvania and passed away on Thursday; September 12, 1912 in Louisa; Linn County, Iowa. He married Jane (Davisson) on Wednesday; December 29, 1869. Emmett served in the military from: Wednesday; August 13, 1862 until Sunday; July 16, 1865. Emmett enlisted in Company B of the 35th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry: "Mustered in on Thursday; September 18, 1862, at Camp Strong in Muscatine; Muscatine County, Iowa. The regiment's average age was higher than in earlier regiments. The later regiments were also more properly equipped, and, as with the Thirty Fifth, often had officers with previous military experience.
