Western Pioneer. Born in the area of Champlain, Quebec, he was a miner and the first European to settle in what would become the State of Iowa. In 1788, he became friends with Chief Peosta of the Fox Indians and received permission to search for lead. He married Peosta's daughter, started a settlement and the Spanish gave him a land grant in 1796. He remained there for the rest of his life, the village became the first city in Iowa, and was named Dubuque in his memory. He died of pneumonia. On October 31, 1897, a monument was dedicated over Dubuque's grave.
