Memorial services will be held for Becky Phillips Carter, 58, of Iredell on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at the Lawson Funeral Home Chapel, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery in Iredell.

Becky Phillips was born on July 15, 1950, in Clifton. She passed away on Oct. 3, 2008, in a Grapevine Hospital from complications from leukemia. She had lived in Franklin, Ky., for 30 years before returning to Iredell.

She was the daughter of Veleta Dennis Phillips and the late Clarence Weldon Phillips.

She graduated from Meridian High School and later attended nursing school, receiving a degree as a Licensed Professional Nurse.

She was a caring nurse from many years before she returned to school at Western Kentucky University where she received a Bachelor's degree in Social Work in 1993, and graduated with honors. She received her Masters' Degree in Counseling from WKU, also.

She was employed for several years by LifeSkills as a therapist and director of Park Place Outpatient Center and later worked in private practice.

Education was very important to her and she strongly encouraged others to use education as an opportunity to a better life.

She recently returned to Texas to be closer to her mother, and was employed at Work Solutions in Clifton.

Her husband, Cecil Wayne Cater, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her mother, Veleta Phillips of Iredell; daughter, Janet Martin of Franklin, Ky.; grandchildren, Rachel Scott of Athens, Ga., Christopher Blake Martin and Emmeline (Emmy) Brooke Martin, both of Franklin, Ky.; sisters, Loreta Owens of Clifton and Reba Dendy of Iredell; and a number of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Memorials are asked to be made to Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas, P.O. Box 293122, Kerrville, TX 78029. Those who knew Becky were aware of her commitment to the humane treatment of all life, especially those that could not advocate for themselves.
