Biography - Catherine Floyd Pease was born 5 or 15 Sep 1807 in Canaan, New York, to Asa Pease, Jr. and Eunice Brown, their sixth of seven children.

Sometime between 1807 and 1811, Asa Pease, Jr., a cooper by occupation, moved his family to Ohio where ship building of small vessels of the 104-tons class had become important. He probably lived in Newport, near Marietta. Catherine's mother died in Washington County in 1811 when Catherine was only four years old.

It was from Newport, Ohio that Asa Pease, Jr. enlisted on June 18, 1813 for the War of 1812. He was wounded July 25, 1814 at Bridgewater in the Battle of Lundy's Lane, and killed August 25, 1814, at Black Rock on land near Buffalo, in ground fighting at the same time the naval forces fought and won the victory with Peary. He was killed at Lake Erie under Peary after having fought all day after being shot in the leg. His family received a letter from his commanding officer telling of his heroism in action.

Thus, Catherine was an orphan at age 7. It is not known who raised her, but it was probably one of her older siblings.

At age 16, on 24 August 1824, she married Dr. Ephraim Quinby and had one child, Eunice, born 12 July 1825, with him. They were soon divorced.

When Catherine was 21, she married Elijah Hawes/Haws. They came in contact with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1838 while living in Indiana with their first five children. They then moved to a farm three miles south of Nauvoo, Illinois. This was in the spring of the 1845 and in the fall, after six months on the farm, they fled into Nauvoo because of the mobs.

They spent the winter in Nauvoo and saw much mob violence. They left in the spring of 1846, with a small body of Saints to settle in Kegs Creek, Iowa. Here they acquired a large farm nine miles north of Kegs Creek, on the Missouri River opposite the Platte River.

Their oldest son, Nathaniel, left in 1850 to come to Utah with a company to prepare a place for the rest of the family. The next year, 1851, Catherine, Elijah, and their family arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. They came by ox-train and wagon in an independent company.

Their son had chosen a place in Payson, Utah, and had built a two-roomed house. He also had a new bride, Lucinda Crockett. They all lived in this two-room house. There were only about eight or nine families living in Payson at this time.

They started plowing and preparing for planting. Catherine's husband bought a saw mill. It furnished material for most of the early homes of that area, until it was burned down by the Indians. They later moved to Benjamin, Utah, where they were prosperous farmers.

Catherine passed away at the age of 78, on 26 Mar 1886, in Benjamin. She is buried in the Payson Cemetery.
