In 1881, Elizabeth married Julius Heyward and they moved to Greenville. When Williams died in 1883 her mother Susan moved to Greenville with her. When Susan died in 1900, Lilly inherited Middleton Place.
She had no children. Therefore, by her will she ensured that Middleton Place would go to a Middleton descendant. Middleton Place passed to her young cousin, the Charleston lawyer, John Julius Pringle Smith (grandson of her mother's brother of the same name and whose grandmother - JJ Pringle Smith Sr's wife- was the daughter of Henry A. Middleton, Esq).
