Film Director. Born in Oakland, California, he was a filmmaker known as a meticulous craftsman and brilliant cinematographer. During his five decade career he directed nearly 70 feature films. He was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning the Oscar for Best Director with "A Place in the Sun" (1951) and "Giant" (1956). He also served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 1958 to 1959 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died at age 70 in Lancaster, California.
