John Bailey, son of Peter and Elizabeth Bailey, was born in Butler County, Ohio, Sept. 19, 1827. When he was six years old his parents moved to Shelby County, Ind. His father was twice married, and has six children surviving by his first wife--Nicholas, Susan, John, Lydia, Henry and Absalom; and two children by his second wife--George F. and Saloma. Our subject was reared to maturity in Shelby County, and was there married in October, 1847, to Catherine Endy, and to them were born four children--Elizabeth, Eve A., Marian, and Sarah (deceased). Mrs. Bailey died in January, 1856, and Mr. Bailey married for his second wife, Rebecca J. Reed in July, 1856. Nine children were born to this union, seven now living--Mary M., George W., Peter N., Susan E., Minetta, Nora E. and Eddie. In 1862 Mr. Bailey came to Hendricks County and settled in Union Township, where he owns eighty acres of land, all of which is well cultivated. Politically Mr. Bailey is a Democrat.

John Bailey was born in Butler County, Ohio, September 19, 1827, and came with his parents to Shelby County, Indiana, when a small boy. In 1861, John Bailey with his family, moved to this county and settled in Union Township near Lizton, where he followed the life of a farmer and stock raiser until his death in 1902. John Bailey was a Jackson Democrat, and he and his wife were consistent members of the Christian Church. He owned a good farm of eighty acres, with good buildings and other improvements, in Union Township. John Bailey is numbered among the early settlers of Hendricks County and, during his life-time, the land has been redeemed from its wild and primitive state.

The first wife of John Bailey (Catherine Emdy) was a native of Shelby County, Indiana, and died in 1855. John Bailey was the father of fourteen children: Mrs. Elizabeth Smith; Sarah, who died at the age of two; Mrs. Eva A. Campbell , and Marion are the children of his first wife, Catherine Emdy. Mrs. Mary E. Dale; George W.; Peter N.; Mrs. Ellen Hall; Mrs. Nettie Hedge; Mrs. Nora E. Lee; Edgar; William, who died at the age of three; John T., and one child which died in infancy, are his children by his second marriage, to Rebecca J. Reed.

John Bailey died August 7, 1902, and his funeral was from his late residence Saturday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Pritchard. Mr. Bailey was reared to manhood in Shelby County and was there married in October 1847 to Catherine Endy and to them were born four children - Elizabeth, Eva A., Marion and Sarah (deceased). Mrs. Bailey died in January, 1856, and Mr. Bailey married for his second wife, Rebecca J. Reed in July, 1856. Ten children were born to this union, eight now living - Mary M., George W., Peter U., Susan E., Minetta, Nora E., Eddie and Johnie. In 1862, Mr. Bailey came to Hendricks County where he lived until his death. He was a member of the Christian Church and lived in that faith. He leaves a widow and a large list of relatives to mourn his departure besides a large number of friends. His remains were laid to rest in the Vieley cemetery, Saturday.
