Theodore S. "Ted" Allen passed away in Salt Lake City, UT on Tuesday March 4, 2003 just 20 minutes before his 85th birthday. Ted was born in Grace, ID on March 5, 1922 to Francis and Faye Stanford Allen.
Following a stint in the United States Navy (1942-1943) and graduation in 1945 for the Cincinnati (OH) College of Embalming, in 1953 Ted founded, owned and until his retirement in 1979, operated the Allen Funeral Home, now Sims Funeral Home, in Soda Springs, ID.
Ted married Rhoda Dobson in 1947 and the two were constant companions for more than 50 years until her death in 2001. Ted and Rhoda had four children; daughter Sandra (Jim) Perlow; sons Todd (Marilyn) Allen, Kent (Lorraine) Allen, and T. Kim (Debbie Transtrum Allen Tobin). In 1998, Kim preceded Ted in death.
In Soda Springs, Ted and Rhoda were active members of the LDS church. In 1954, Ted was elected Caribou County coroner and was re-elected continuously for 25 years until 1979 when he and Rhoda moved to Salt Lake City. For many of those years, Ted served as the voluntary driver of the county's ambulance service. His civic contributions included member and chairman of the Soda Springs Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. Ted's professional accomplishments earned him recognition and listings in "Who's Who in the West" for four consecutive years in the early 1970's.
In 1986, Ted bought a go-cart for his two grandsons, Tyler and Bryan, who are Kim's sons. Much to the boys' astonishment, Grandpa demonstrated how to drive the vehicle. In 1998 and 2001, he welcomed granddaughters Libby and Lucy (Todd's daughters) into the family. The two girls soon dubbed Ted their "blue-eyed Grandpa."
In addition to his two grandsons and two granddaughters, Ted is survived by seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. As one of 12 children, nine boys born to Francis and Faye Allen, Ted is also survived by two sisters, Connie Allen Mathews of Boise, ID and Faye Allen Lynch of Grapevine, TX.
A memorial service honoring Ted's life will be held Saturday, March 8th at 2 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr. in Salt Lake City. Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery. In lieu of cards and flowers the family requests contributions to be made to the T. Kim Allen Memorial Scholarship, c/o Carol Mahar, College of Business, Idaho State University, Campus Box 8020, Pocatello, ID 83209.
