"Royal A. Ferris Jr. Dies After Illness - Royal A. Ferris Jr., 62, president of the Browning-Ferris Machinery Company until his retirement in 1949, died at his home, 4125 Turtle Creek, Saturday afternoon following a brief illness. His father was one of the Southwest's most prominent bankers and Ferris Plaza in front of Union Station is named for him.

A native of Dallas, Ferris attended the old Terrell School here and Sewanee Military Academy and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. In 1916 he graduated from the University of Texas, where he majored in geology.

Ferris served with the U.S. Army in both World Wars, rising to the rank of colonel. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A founder of Browning-Ferris Machinery in 1926, he remained with the company until his retirement.

His numerous Masonic activities included charter membership in the Metropolitan Masonic Lodge and serving as stage director of Scottish Rite reunions for 25 years. He was also a knight commander of the code of honor, a thirty-third-degree Mason and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters and the Red Cross of Constantine.

Ferris was a life member of the Dallas Athletic Club, a charter member of the Brook Hollow Country Club and an associate member of the Variety Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Royal A. Ferris III of Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Davis C. Neale of Coral Gables, Fla., and three grandsons.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Sparkman's Funeral Home."
