John M. Austin, 77, of Lafayette, died at 11:10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at Home Hospital.

Born Feb. 7, 1931, in Cutler, he was the son of the late Maynard and Leafy Miller Austin. He attended Rossville High School and achieved his GED while serving in the Marine Corps. He lived in Rossville before moving to Lakeland, Fla., in 1993, and returned to this area this summer.

He married Anna E. Young on Jan. 28, 1952, and she survives.

Mr. Austin was a retired dairy farmer.

He was a member of Pine Grove Old German Baptist Brethren Church near Lakeland, FL and was one of the first volunteer EMTs with the Rossville Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Jerry Austin (wife: Debbie) of Rossville, Jimmy Austin of Camden and Jeffery Austin (wife: Cindy) of North Port Charlotte, Fla.; two daughters, Jane Clark (husband: Ralph) of Chicago and Jenny Austin (husband: Bruce Snider) of Lafayette; and a brother, Joe Austin (wife: Beverly) of Lakeland, Fla.

Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Rotar (husband: Joe) of Lambard, Ill., Nikki Pearson (husband: Kyle) of Camden, Krista Niglio (husband: Dustin) of Cardiff, Calif., Lynn Holloway (husband: Ryan) of Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and Jason Austin of Port Charlotte, Fla.; 2 stepgrandchildren, Kimberly Phillips (husband: Kevin) and Tony Snider (wife: April) both of Livingston, Tenn.; 7 great-grandchildren and 4 stepgreat-grandchildren. A brother, Paul Austin, preceded in death.
