Funeral services for Hjalmer B. Erickson, 88, of Benson were 11 a.m., Mon., Oct. 27, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson with Rev. David Andert officiating.

Burial was in Our Redeemer's Cemetery in Benson.

He died Thursday, October 23, at the Swift County Benson Hospital of heart failure after surviving a heroic struggle against cancer.

Hjalmer was born March 11, 1920 in Benson to Ingvald and Anna Erickson.



He was a lifelong resident of Benson, graduating from Benson High School in 1938. In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Rhode Island.

June 20, 1942, he married Blanche Berg.

Following the war, Hjalmer returned to Benson to work with his father at the Southside Meat Market for several years. He then joined Swift & Co., where he was employed as a route supervisor for 20 years. He was recognized as an outstanding salesman and created numerous, lasting friendships along the way.

Hjalmer was a very active community member. He served on the Benson City Council, as well as 31 years as a volunteer fireman and seven as fire chief.



In 1962, he ran a vigorous campaign for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

He was a member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, and sang in the church choir for many years. He loved music and very much enjoyed his years as a member of the Hungry Four barbershop quartet.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Inez and Julius Larson; son-in-law, Charles (Rusty) Stromgren.

Hjalmer is survived by his wife of 66 years, Blanche; his daughters, Linda Stromgren of Blaine and Anne Marie Erickson and her husband, Richard Cain of Grand Rapids; his grandson Adam (Erin) Stromgren of Blaine, and several nieces and nephews
