Verlyn Wood Stout, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2008 in St. George, Utah. She was born on September 13, 1922, in Hurricane, Utah to John Nenniel and Martha Bradshaw Wood.
Verlyn was the only surviving daughter in a family of 5 boys growing up in Hurricane. She married her sweetheart, Elton, on her 18th birthday in 1940. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. Johnny, Reynold and Randee were born in Hurricane. Their early life was met with many challenges because their oldest child, Johnny was born with spina bifida, requiring many surgeries and much sacrifice for this struggling young family. In 1945, they moved to Kanarraville, UT, where Terry, Sue and Orvil were born. Elton and Verlyn had a great love for the people of Kanarraville.
In 1953, they moved to Las Vegas where a special school for the handicapped offered an opportunity for Johnny. It was in Las Vegas where Mary Lue and Tracy were born. They made many friends while living in North Las Vegas and it was hard for them to leave, but because of complications in Elton's business, they moved to St. George in 1969. They moved into the boundaries of the St. George Third Ward where they enjoyed many great associations for the remainder of their lives.
Verlyn had a special love of music and although too timid to share her talents, she always encouraged her children and grandchildren. She dedicated her life to serving her family and those around her. She was always involved in church callings, serving in various organizations, always showing concern for others. As a couple, they never missed an opportunity to visit friends and family wherever they went.
Being married to Elton was often adventurous. Every vacation was a business trip. Through the years, Verlyn always had her bags packed, ready to go, at a moments notice.
Verlyn will be fondly remembered not only for her kindness and quiet service, but also for her great skill as a seamstress. She spent much of her life sewing fine suits, pageant gowns, costumes, draperies and almost anything anyone needed. She had a knack for designing clothes and making them, often without even using a pattern.
Elton and Verlyn served a welfare mission at the cannery and were ordinance workers in the St. George Temple for seven years.
Surviving family members include her children, Reynold (Mary Ellen) Stout, St. George, Randee (Terry) Taylor, Gunlock, Terry (Susan) Clovis, CA, Sue (the Late Mervyn) Cox, St. George, the late Orvil (Shauna Stout Oliver), St. George, Mary Lue (Lynn) Lewis, Las Vegas, Tracy (Ryan) Behunin, Highland, UT; 53 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren, 3 great- great- children; four brothers, Gordon (Shirley) Wood, Blair (Birgitta) Wood, Arlington (Dorothy) Wood, and Warner (Marilyn) Wood. Preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Johnny and Orvil; and one son-in-law, Mervyn; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Bryant; and two sisters, Pauline and Lois.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Ted Warthen Assisted Living Center for their loving care. She was a great example to us all and will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George 3rd Ward Chapel, 200 W. 500 N., St. George. Interment will take place at the Hurricane City Cemetery.
