John C. Caruthers Jr. of York died at 1:45 a.m. Oct. 28 at Normandie Ridge. He was 81.

Mr. Caruthers taught Education and Bible at Northeastern Bible College. He was employed for 11 years as a counselor at the Charleston Rescue Mission in Charleston, W.Va., and also at the Colony of Mercy at America's Keswick in Whiting, N.J. He served as administrator of Vineland Christian School in NJ. Bible Baptist School in Shiremanstown PA, the Harrisburg (PA) Christian School, and Lancaster (PA) Christian School. He was also a principal at Timothy Christian School in Piscataway, N.J., and Middle School principal at York Christian School.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific.

He was a member of the Ocean County Baptist Church in Toms River, N.J. He also taught Bible school for many years.
He was a member of the Middle Atlantic Christian School Association(MACSA).

He was a member the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He had earned a B.A. in business administration and a B.S. in history from Allegheny College in Meadville; he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a master's degree in education. He extended his studies in elementary education at Temple University. His favorite sciences were Meterology and Geology. His favorite subject to teach was Bible.

Born in Wheeling, W.Va., Aug. 13, 1921, he was a son of the late John Clyde and Naomi Welshans Caruthers.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Josephine W. Wagner Caruthers; two daughters, Nancy Karns and Susan Gardner; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is predeceased by a brother Eugene (Bud) and a grandson, Billy.

Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Friday at York Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road. A celebration of life service with full military honors, provided by the York County Honor Guard, is 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. David R. King of the York Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and the Rev. Michael Weigel of the Ocean County Baptist Church in Toms River, N.J., officiating.
