Royal Nelson
Royal Nelson, 83, of Stanwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1993.
He was born Jan. 1, 1910 in Caldwell, Idaho, to Edward and Josephine Nelson, one of nine children.
At the age of 14, he moved to Seattle, where he graduated from Seattle Pacific High School and College.
At Seattle Pacific, Royal met Lola Lingle. They were married in 1933 and moved to Sanders, Idaho, where they pastored a Free Methodist Church. After pastoring a number of churches in the Northwest, Royal was elected General Sunday School Secretary for the Free Methodist Church in 1955, and the family moved to Indiana. While Sunday School Secretary, he served on the NAtional Sunday School Association Board and began writing for several religious publications.
IN 1964, Royal was elected superintendent of the Northern California District of the Free Methodist Church. Upon retirement in 1973, he traveled the country holding evangelistic meetings.
In 1980, the Nelsons moved to their present home at the Warm Bench Estates.
During his years in the ministry, Royal was instrumental in building Sanders Camp in Idaho, starting Warm Beach Camp, and developing the Warm Beach Senior Community. He also served on numerous other boards and committees of his church. Although Royal held many positions of responsibility, the focus of his years in the ministry was loving people and helping them to know Christ better.
Royal will be greatly missed by his wife Lola, his sons, Gene of Indianapolis, Wes of Kilkenny, Ireland, Keith of Granite Bay, CA; and daughter Susan Hodgson of Sparks, Nevada; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Royal's memorial services were Sunday, Dec. 26 at the Warm Beach Free Methodist Church, Stanwood.
Memorial may be given to the Warm Beach Senior Community for their Garden Room project.
