Second Lieutenant Bruner was killed in service, co-piloting U.S. Army Air Forces
B-25D Mitchell #41-30140.

The aircrew were on a navigational training flight out of Mather Field, Sacramento, to Bakersfield, California, and return. At 22:12 hours, the crew radioed their position to the Bakersfield tower and informed them that they were heading north to Fresno. At 22:30 hours, a rancher heard the airplane crash into Sunday Peak, roughly midway between Glennville and Kernville, in northeastern Kern County, and notified authorities. At 00:30 hours (6/17/44) firefighters from the Forest Service arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the fire.
All three airmen aboard had perished.
Investigators could not determine why the airplane was flying off-course and crashed at the 4,900 foot level, below the 5,000 feet they were assigned.

Also killed were:

1Lt. Robert G Chute, Pilot
2LT Glen W Edwards, Pilot-rated passenger
