Melissa Caroline (Brown] was the eighth of ten children born in Itawamba County, Mississippi, to Sarah "Sally" (Cox) Brown and Obediah Brown. She married George Alexander Hancock in Itawamba County, Mississippi on December 22, 1858. Her father was murdered when she was five years old and she was completely orphaned five years later, when her mother died. She was living with her older brother's family at age 14, when she married George Alexander Hancock. They were blessed with thirteen children and still she brought her younger sister to live with them. Melissa and George were married for 56 years, when she died and less than six months later, he followed her to the grave.
