Van Buren Stanbery was a son of Nathaniel & Samantha (Oglesby) Stanbery. At the age of 20 on 11 Sept. 1887, Van married Mary E. "Mintie" Bond, daughter of James & Jane (Herndon) Bond. Van & Mintie began their family in Ennis, Texas, living & working near her parents.

In late 1894 or early 1895 Van, Mintie and their four children moved to Van Zandt County. Altogether they had 17 children--including two sets of twins--fourteen of which had families of their own.

Van died at the young age of 56. According to his son Homer, Van died of lung cancer, although he was not a smoker. Earlier in his life he had a problem with alcohol, but in early 1901 while drinking at a Grand Saline saloon, his four-year old daughter Laura May, burned to death in a brush fire at home. That tragic loss sobered him up and he became a Christian. At the time of his death, he had served as a deacon of Starr Baptist Church for about 20 years.
