Joseph Grierson Fox (Uncle Joe), eighth child of William Maine and Eleanor Lynn Fox, was born in Suntown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland, April 12, 1822; died in Dane Co., Wisconsin in 1906. He came to America with his parents when he was about 11, lived in La Grange Co., Indiana until 1844 when he went to Dane Co., Wisconsin Territory, at age 22. He took up 160 acres of government land one mile west of the village of Oregon, to which he added from time to time until he had 355 acres of improved land which was devoted mostly to raising Belgian horses.

Carolyn Fox Burns says that her grandfather, Joseph Grierson Fox, told her that he crossed the Atlantic Ocean 13 times. He returned to Ireland the first time to marry his first wife, Mary Lalor, daughter of Patrick Lalor of Tenakill, Queen's Co., on June 22, 1845. She died in Dane County, Wisconsin August 30, 1850. In 1854 Uncle Joe returned to Ireland to marry Harriet Lucinda Adamson, daughter of Christian Adamson of Ballinlock, Ireland. Aunt Harriet was born in Co. Westmeath, Ireland July 1820, died in Dane Co., Wisconsin February 24, 1895.
