He married Julia Etta Vines on 8 September 1926 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was one of the organizers of the Alabama State Rifle Association and was at one time, president of the group. He had military service during World War I. His unit was sent to the front, but Ernest came down with the measles and was sent to London, England to work in a military hospital, where he was in charge of the supply trains going to the front in France. He also helped bring wounded soldiers back across the English Channel. He served on the Guard of Honor when President Wilson came to London for a League of Nations meeting. He spent the next few years as an English teacher, but also served as a principal. In 1923, he began his carrer as a special agent for the United States Treasury Department as a handwriting and fingerprinting expert. He became head of the unit in Atlanta, Georgia and from there he was sent all over the country to teach law enforcement classes.
