He was born in Alsace-Lorraine and immigrated to the US about 1830 at which time he was separated from his family and bound out as an indentured servant to an Upstate New York farmer. His name was anglicized and was originally something that sounded like Comveldt. His death certificate gives his date of birth as 15 March 1822 and his father's name as John.

After his indenture was up he worked as a boatman on the Erie Canal near Syracuse, NY. He married Sarah Ann Wisner abt 1843. Sometime after 1850 they moved west, living near Waukegan, IL. They later lived in Buchanan, MI, Bronson, MI and Burr Oak, MI
