Nicholas served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24L #44-49840, 23rd Bomber Squadron, 5th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Wayne County, Michigan prior to the war.

Nicholas was promoted to Staff Sergeant on November 8, 1944.

B-24L #44-49840 took off from APO 719, Guian, Samar Island, Philippines with 6 other B-24's on a bombing mission over Mindanao Island, Philippines. After passing through a large cloud B-24L #44-49840 went missing. They were later found to have crashed into Mount Kitanglad, Mindanao Island for an unknown reason. B-24L #44-41549 also crashed on this same mission.

Nicholas was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on August 16, 1949.

Service # 36597717

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
