David Shipman was a Private in the Essex County, New Jersey Militia during the Revolutionary War. In a deposition dated 25 September 1832, Aaron Shipman, of Springfield, Essex County, NJ, states that David Shipman is his brother and attests to his Revolutionary War service. After the second return of his pension application papers, in August 1834, David appeared before a Justice of the Peace for Madison County, New York and made a supplementary deposition regarding his military service.
He was eventually awarded a pension of $20 per year beginning March 4, 1837 and ending with his death on January 3, 1840. Three daughters, Fanny Chaffee, Patty Munger, and Phebe Ames and a son, David Jr. survived him. In October 1851 a determination was made that Fanny Chaffee, Phebe Ames and David Shipman Jr. were his living heirs and they apparently collected the pension monies due their father.
