Born in New York, Henry Giles was a Cadet of the Military Academy from Dec 23, 1814, to July 24, 1818, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army. He served in garrison at Detroit, Mich., 1818-19; as Adjutant, 5th Infantry, Jan. 4, to June 4, 1819; and in garrison at Ft. Armstrong, Ill., 1819.

*He is buried in the Giles family graveyard on the Pleasant Home Road. His headstone has the following inscription: "H. Giles, son of Aquilei and E.S. Giles. Born No. 54 Broadway, N.Y., Sept. 22, 1795. Died March 27, 1877." The late Bayless Hardin of the Kentucky Historical Society said that it was the only tombstone inscription he ever heard of so complete that the address of place of birth of deceased was given.


On the 1850 Owen County, Ky Census, he is a 54 year old New York native, a farmer. Living with him were his wife, Maria Giles, and children, Elizabeth, Lucy C., Aquilla, Mary Ann, George W., Henry T., James and William Giles.

On the 1870 Gratz, Owen County, Ky Census, he is a 74 year old New York native, a farmer. Living with him were his son, James K. P. Giles; son, William F. and his wife, Martha V. Giles; and grandson, William H. Giles. Also listed is Tandy Quisenberry, a 22 year old, white, Ky native, a farm laborer.
