GODFREY — Elizabeth Anne Pirtle died on April 29, 2016 in Alton Memorial Hospital following a brief illness, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born on August 10, 1921, at home in Greenville, Illinois, the only daughter and second child of Leslie E. and Anna Elizabeth Cable DeMoulin.

Elizabeth's paternal grandfather, Erastus, would frequently visit the home of his son, Leslie, and after Elizabeth's birth, upon entering the house, would inquire, in French: "Ou est le bebe?" ("Where is the baby?"). It didn't take too long for Elizabeth to be referred to as "bebe,"the nickname by which she was known for the rest of her life.

She attended local schools, and upon graduating high school, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. While at Stephens, Bebe met and became lifetime best friends with Virginia Thatcher, later Virginia Hacker. That friendship led to Bebe meeting and marrying Forrest E. Pirtle, of Jerseyville, in November, 1941.

Bebe was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jerseyville, as well as the women's club, P.E.O. Bebe and Forrest were founding members of Westlake Country Club.

In 1998, Bebe sold her home in Oakwood Place and moved to the Methodist Village in Godfrey, following her neighbor, Jane Thatcher Schwarz. Several years after this move, she met Walter G. Hunt, a fellow Village resident and neighbor. This friendship blossomed into a committed, loving partnership until Bebe's death.

Bebe was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann (1946); her husband, Forrest (1989); her brother, William L. DeMoulin (2007); and her parents.

Bebe is survived by her devoted companion Walter G. Hunt, of Godfrey; three children: Dianne DeMoulin Pirtle of Long Beach, California; Sherrill Leslie Pirtle, and his wife, Pamela, of O'Fallon, Missouri, and William Forrest Pirtle, of Santa Monica, California; two grandchildren, Ryan Leslie Pirtle and wife, Bethany, of Lake St. Louis. Missouri, and Stephanie Leigh Pirtle Turner (Mrs. Jacob G.) of Springfield, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Raeleigh Elizabeth Turner, Thatcher Forrest Pirtle and Ryder Allan Pirtle.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville. The funeral will immediately follow, beginning at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville. The Rev. Dr. T. Edwards Breed will be officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cradle, Evanston, Illinois, and First Presbyterian Church, Jerseyville, Illinois.
