Wilhelm Stamm was born the son of Hans Heinrich and Anna Catharine (Hess) Stamm in Neukirchen, Schwalm-Eder-Kreis District, Hesse-Kassel, Germany. He arrived in New York City aboard the "Bremen Bark Diana" on October 22, 1850. After migrating to the United States, he resided for a time in East Birmingham [now a part of the City of Pittsburgh], Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he was a founding member of the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church along with the Neu and Waterman Families. He served in the Grand Army of the Republic before migrating to Logan Township, Washington County, Kansas along with the Neu and Waterman Families. In Washington County, Kansas he, along with the Neu and Waterman Families founded the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church of Logan Township, Washington County, Kansas.

His burial record states "He was the Father of All Stamms in this Locality"
