Author. He is best known for the acclaimed 1978 novel "Birdy", which won the National Book Award for First Novel and became a 1984 film adaptation. Born Albert DuAime in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he served in the United States Army Infantry during World War II and later studied art at UCLA. He resided with his family in Europe during the 1950s and 1960s where he earned a living as a painter before turning to writing. His other notable works include "Dad" (1981) and "A Midnight Clear" (1982), which both later became motion picture adaptations.
