Jack was 15 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy (Service No. 576-18-62) as a Seaman Apprentice on 25 Oct 1942 at Houston, Harris Co., TX.
.
He was assigned to Amphibious Training with duty on small boat crew / landing craft.
.
He served aboard the USS LST 351, USS LST 157 and the USS Thomas Jefferson (APA-30).
.
He participated in the landings at Algeria, invasion of Sicily and Salerno.
.
On D-Day, 6 June 1944, he made six runs to transport troops to the beaches at Normandy.
.
Afterwards, he was assigned to the USS LST 491 and participated in the landings on the southern coast of France on 15 Aug 1944.
.
In the winter of 1944, the USS LST 491 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and he took part in the assault and landings at Okinawa, Gunto.

On 7 Jun 1947, he married Thelma Pearl Frazier in Houston, Harris Co., TX. Their children: Henry Jackson Campbell, Jr.; Roby Garnett Campbell; Oleta Pearl "Doll" Campbell, Jerry Lynn Campbell, Willie Leroy Campbell; Tom Allen Campbell and Timothy Paul Campbell.

After World War II, Jack joined the Houston Fire Dept. He was first assigned to Station 1 and one of the major fires he responded to was the explosion of the Alco Fireworks Company on 5 Jun 1953. During Hurricane Carola (Sept 1961) he was assigned to Station 37, he also served at Station 33, Station 19 and Station 31. At the time of his death, he was serving at Station 34.
