Gary Carstens was born March 21, 1953, the son of Lloyd and Vera Frey Carstens. He died on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Bryan LGH Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of forty-nine.
Gary was born in Denison, Iowa and lived with his family near Buck Grove, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on June 7, 1953 and later confirmed on May 14, 1967 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa. Gary graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1971 and continued his education at the Westmar College in LeMars.
After completing his education, Gary worked in the purchasing department at World Wide Meats and later for Farm Bureau Insurance. He moved to Glenville, Nebraska, where he worked for the Ebco Boat Company for six years. Gary began farming and working for Skellgas for a short time but continued farming.
Gary was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove. He was on the Board of Directors of the Bobcat Speedway in Blencoe, Iowa. He enjoyed Go-Cart Racing, was an avid fisherman and hunter who possessed a keen eye for sharp shooting.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents. Survivors include two sons, Tyler and his wife, Melissa of Des Moines; Casey of Clarksville, Tennessee; his daughter, Kelsey of Dow City; one grandson, Noah of Des Moines; his parents Lloyde and Vera Carstens of Defiance; and two brothers, Ross and his wife, Kitty; and Dale and his wife, Kim, all of West Des Moines; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm, Friday, November 1, 2002, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Buchholz officiated the service and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for Larry Boeck as he sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Asleep In Jesus". The congregational hymn was "Beautiful Savior". Those serving as pallbearers were: George Janssen, LeRoy Stover, Don Carstens, Dave Morgan, Curt Janssen, and Donald Tank.
