Judge John Benton Brown was born in South Carolina February 9, 1785. He was a probate judge in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, where he married Sarah Ann Huston on October 6, 1808. John was in the War of 1812, 2nd Regiment Cocke's West Tennessee Militia. First Sergeant, Captain Francis S. Ellis's Company. He was in the Battle of New Orleans. John and Sarah moved to Cabin Creek (now Lamar), Johnson County, Arkansas in 1836. He had a machine shop and grist mill under the name of J. B. Brown and Brother. He was a probate judge in Johnson County in 1838 and 1852. Judge Brown was elected to the State Legislature of Arkansas in 1844. The Browns belonged to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. John died October 25, 1852 and Sarah died April 1, 1861. They are buried at the Brown Cemetery, 2.3 miles North of Lamar on Highway 359.
