Lewis John Gardner, 91 years of age of Sanford died October 27, 2008 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough following a two year struggle with COPD.

Lewis was born in Garfield Plantation, Maine on December 24, 1916 the son of Lewis J. and Maude Eastman Gardner. Because of the tragic death of his parents, he was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Elsie and Allen Grendell.

During his younger years, he was in the Civilian Conservation Corp., on the coast and then entered the U.S. Army, was a veteran of World War II and participated in the Battle of The Bulge.

Lewis worked with the ground maintenance crew at the Roosevelt Estate on Deer Island and then worked at shoe shops and woolen mills in Sanford and Springvale. He retired as a machinist from the Jagger Woolen Mill in Sanford.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 143 in Wells and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Some of his most treasured time was spent riding the back roads enjoying the solitude, nature and wildlife. Another pastime was tinkering with cars and going on the hunt for a part he needed.

Lewis was predeceased by his wife Rowena Roake Gardner, their son Kevin, his parents, his aunt and uncle and their son Linwood. A brother, Theodore, two sisters, Williamina Guthro and Althea Patten.

He is survived by his loving daughter and caregiver, Cheryl Main and her husband Paul of Alfred. His granddaughters, April Hundley and her husband Tom, Darlene Smades and husband and grandson, Charles Libby III. Also surviving are 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Survivors also include Pauline "Sis" Beaudoin, Ralph and Preston Grendell and Phyllis Clewley all who were raised with him.

Lewis will be missed by many and forgotten by none.

A graveside service will be held at 11am Friday, October 31, 2008 at the Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford with military honors.
