Lloyd Payton, Jr., of Muskogee, Oklahoma, passed from this world October 27, 2008 while at home.

Lloyd was born June 24, 1933, the son of Frank Lloyd Payton and Rosebud Palmer. He grew up in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma in the Georgetown Bottom area. After high school Lloyd attended college at Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Following college he joined the United States Air Force.

While stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas he persuaded Ersel Ford to return with him after basic training to Tuscon, Arizona and become his wife, a marriage that would endure over 51 years. While in Tuscon Lloyd and Ersel were blessed with the first of their three children, Patti Ann Payton, now Gannaway. Lloyd served in the Air Police while stationed in Tuscon.

Following his discharge from the United States Air Force, Lloyd and Ersel and their daughter, Patti, returned home to Oklahoma living initially in the Tulsa area. While in Tulsa, Lloyd enrolled in law school at Tulsa University graduating in May 1961. After graduation from law school Lloyd came to Muskogee to begin a most successful career as an attorney. Lloyd's practice began in the Muskogee County Attorney's office. However, this lasted only a short time until he followed his passions and lived out he remainder of his practice defending the rights of others for over forty-seven (47) years.

Lloyd was a member of several professional organizations which included being a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Ersel, in June of 2004; his parents, Frank and Rosebud Payton and by his sisters, Shirlee Ann Buffington and Emma Lou Gladd.

Lloyd is survived by his three children, Patti Ann Payton Gannaway of Lafayette, Louisiana, John Jeffrey Payton of Stillwell, Oklahoma, and Gregory Paul Payton of Muskogee. In addition to his three children Lloyd leaves eight grandchildren, Reagan Payton, Payton Gannaway, Jennifer Gannaway, Morgan Payton, Gregory Gannaway, Palmer Payton, Mackenzie Payton and Fulton Payton as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Other survivors are all his friends that knew and loved him including his dear friend and caretaker, Al Skinner.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ann Brizendine officiating. Interment will follow in Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lloyd's grandchildren, Reagan Payton, Jennifer Gannaway, Morgan Payton, Gregory Gannaway, Palmer Payton, Mackenzie Payton, Fulton Payton, Ronnie Boswell and Teddy Boswell.
