Rev John Joseph Barthouski OSA
John was born in Lebau, Walzenhausen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland on December 27, 1877. He received his early education at St Mary's Academy in Hoosick Falls NY. He later entered the novitiate at Villanova PA in 1896 and was ordained to the priesthood there on January 19, 1901 by Archbishop Prendergast.
Fr Barthouski taught at the Augustinian Academy on Staten Island NY, and later at St Rita's High School in Chicago IL. At various times he served as prior and pastor at St Clare's parish in Chicago, at St Augustine's in Detroit MI, and at St Clare's in Grosse Pointe MI. At the Provincial Chapter of 1938, he was elected prior and pastor of St Augustine's Church in Philadelphia PA where he continued to serve as pastor for the next 18 years. He was a Definitor of the Province from 1944 to 1956. At the Provincial Chapter of 1956, he was again made prior of St Augustine's.
Fr Barthouski was 80 when he died in St Joseph's Hospital in Philadelphia on July 30, 1957. He is buried in the Community Cemetery at Villanova.
