He was born on the family farm in Rock County on June 18, 1921, the son of Reuben Wayne and Emma Mary (Schiefelbein) Mathews. Wayne served in the United States Navy from July 30, 1942, until he was Honorably discharged on October 1, 1945. He was stationed in Italy, France and Sicily. After he was discharged, he married Lorraine Rae St. Clair on April 13, 1947, in Wabasha, Minnesota. Wayne worked at the GMAD (General Motors Assembly Plant) in Janesville for over 30 years, retiring in 1978. Wayne was an active life member of the VFW Kienow-Hilt Post #1621, where he served as Post Commander from 1987-1988. Wayne and his wife lived in Arizona for 12 years before moving back to Janesville in 1992. Some of Wayne's interests include, golfing, bowling, football, fishing, and camping. Wayne was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, who loved his family dearly. He was a true gentleman. Wayne passed away on October 26, 2008, at Beloit Memorial Hospital. Wayne is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lorraine of Janesville; and four children: Charles (Dawn) Mathews of Janesville, Linda Knudsen of Janesville, Sally Mathews of Janesville and Richard Mathews of Edgerton; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jerry; two brothers and one sister.
