James was a Civil War veteran. He was a member of Company G 5th NY Heavy Artillery. He joined as a private in Sept 1862. He mustered out at wars end as a corporal on Jun 1865 at Harper's Ferry, VA. He became a carpenter by trade.
On 24 Aug 1867 he married the widow Sarah E. Emerson .
He went on to have three children with Sarah +a stepdaughter Ellen Emerson..
In 1889 he developed Muscular Atrophy in lower limbs and checked into a Home for Disabled Volunteer Solders in Kennebec ME. He was discharged in Apr 1894. In July 1898 he was admitted first in the Home for disabled Soldiers in Maine then transferred to an veterans home in Hampton, VA. and died there in 1901.
His wife, Sarah Elizabeth [Perrine] Russell born 1847 was still living in Orange, NJ in 1905. When she died in 1906, it appears she was interred in Clinton Cem. in Irvington, NJ.
