Baynes B. McSwain
Baynes B. McSwain, of Hood River, died May 16, 1996 at his home. Mr. McSwain, who owned and operated movie theaters in Hood River, was 74.
He was born Nov. 3, 1921 in Ada. Okla, to Foster and Thelma (Ballew) McSwain. In a partnership with his brothers, Mr. McSwain operated theaters here from 1949 until his retirement upon selling the theaters in 1983. At that time, Mr. McSwain and his wife, Elizabeth, moved to Bend with a winter home in Indio, Calif.
In 1993, the couple moved back to Hood River to be near family during the summer.
During his years in business, Mr. McSwain was a member of the Hood River Lions Club and the Hood River Elks Lodge No. 1507. He employed many of Hood River's young people, giving them their first jobs. After moving back to Hood River, Mr. McSwain enjoyed having adults greet him saying they worked for him as teen-agers and like to say he and his brothers built the Indoor-Outdoor Theatres in Hood River.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth McSwain, of Hood River; son James E. McSwain of San Marcos, Texas; daughter Margaret J. McSwain of Austin, Texas; friend, former wife and mother of his children Betty W. McSwain of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Foster and Bette McSwain and family of Coos Bay; sisters-in-law Dorothy, Viola and Inez McSwain and their children; mother-in-law and father-in-law Susie and Ray Hughes of Hood River; stepsons Steven, Scott and Clark Bryant of the Hood River area, and Jeffrey Bryant of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and brother-in-law James L. Cole of Blackhawk, S.D.
Private family services were held Tuesday, May 21, at Pine Grove Cemetery. Pastor Emory May of Odell Baptist Church officiated. Internment followed the services at the cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Anderson Funeral Home.
