US Diplomat, Cleveland Mayor. He was the first African-American Mayor of a major US city. Following service in the Army, he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives for three terms before serving as mayor of Cleveland from 1968 to 1971. Afterward he became the first African-American TV news anchorman in New York City. President Bill Clinton appointed Stokes US Ambassador to the Republic of Seychelles and he served in that capacity from 1994 to 1995. He died of esophageal cancer.
