He was born in Geislingen, Wuerttemburg, Germany on 20 September 1845. He was the son of Jeremias Nieffer and Cresenzia Mueller Nieffer. He is a direct descendent(grandson) of Johannn Carl Christian Nieffer, b. 1787 in Stuttgart, Wuerttemburg and d. 1871 in Ludwigsburg, Wuerttemburg. Johann Carl Christian Nieffer was a regionally prominent architect who designed and built many Lutheran churches in the Geislingen/Balingen area of Wuerttemburg many of which remain in use today. He was in the service and favor of the King of Wuerttemburg.

Clemens was a Civil War vet who fought at Gettysburg with the 40th NY(Mozart) regiment. He died at the age of 39 in the National Soldiers Home in Hampton, VA.

Clemens emigrated with his parents and sisters, Antonia and Viktoria, May, 1852. They settled in Brooklyn, NY.

C. 1866, Clemens married Josephina Schilling. In July, 1867, a son, John, was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Josephina died of Tuberculosis at age 20+ on 5 May 1869. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queens, NY.

C. 1873, Clemens married Helena Bast, daughter of Joseph Bast and Veronika Kurz, natives of Grosschaftshausen, Schwendi, Wuerttemburg. Clemens and Helena produced two daughters, Anna Wilhelmina b. 1874, d.1950 in Elizabeth, NJ and Helena Veronika b. 1879, d. 1967 in Manasquan, NJ. Both born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and baptized in the Church of the Annunciation.
