Son of William and Elizabeth Burger; husband of Etta Curry Burger; father of Clair Lloyd, Carl Leo, Milton Roy, Harry Raymond, Kenneth William, Ethel Irene (Pfaff), and Donald Charles Burger.

BURGER, Charles Daniel; spouse of Etta Curry; born 15 Dec 1868; died 13 Mar 1955; s/o William and Charity Elizabeth Karns Burger; Sec North A-row 14

Carl W. Burger, son of Clair (Sonny) Burger, Jr. and grandson of Clair Burger, Sr.:

My grandfather died when Sonny was almost 13 years old. His grandparents, Charles and Etta Burger, took Sonny and raised him. Charles and Etta had the 100-acre homestead where they grew potatoes. Sonny said that he worked hard on the farm plowing behind a horse and working the land. He would pick potato bugs off the plants by hand. Another one of his jobs was to walk behind Charles and pick up every other potato eye that was planted. Charles said, "I'm not going to burn my land up." Charles felt that if he planted less, his land would use less nutrients and the yield would sustain them for the long run. Of course, a little fertilizer would have fixed that problem.

When World War II happened, Sonny joined the Navy as an airplane mechanic. When he was in Boot Camp, he gained weight while the other fellows lost weight. He said of Boot Camp, "I never had it so easy." After working for his Grandfather Charles on the farm, Boot Camp was the easy life.
